Insurance Won’t Pay for Damage from Fire Engine

A firefighter passed out behind the wheel of a fire engine and caused damage to five yards and a house, but his employer’s insurance company notified homeowners it wasn’t going to cut them a check. Because the driver suffered a "sudden, unexpected medical event" while operating a 5-ton vehicle, there was no negligence on the part of the Spring Hill Fire Rescue District and therefore, it wasn’t under any "legal obligation" to pay for the damage, according to a letter mailed by Glatfelter Claims Management, the agency’s insurance provider.
